With encouragement from her Ag teacher, friends and the draw of competition, Durant High School’s Jessica Odom decided in her freshman year to join the school’s FFA chapter and she’s never looked back. Now a senior, Odom said she enjoys being in FFA, but when she first joined, she wasn’t sure if FFA was the right club for her.

“At first I wasn’t sure if FFA would be something I would want to do, but as my freshman year went on I got mor involved and I grew to love it,” said Odom. “Sophomore year I was the secretary for opening and closing ceremonies, I’ve been on the trap shooting team every year, and I serve at the annual chili dinner every year also.”

As a student-athlete, Odom puts in the work to be a standout softball and track athlete for Durant High School. The lessons and work ethic she has learned in FFA have translated to preparing and competing in sports. In track, Odom runs hurdles and sprint replays, while in softball she plays in the outfield. Odom said it’s her family that pushed her to give her all and do her best.

“My family is my biggest influence. They push me to do the best I can at everything,” said Odom.

The senior said anyone that has a desire to join the FFA chapter at Durant High School should do it. “FFA is awesome, you build great relationships with other students, and Ag teacher. I’ve also learned great leadership skills and I’ve been encouraged to get out of my comfort zone and meet many more people,” said Odom.
