Talihina’s Jackson Washburn – Northeastern State University Spotlight

Growing up watching role models perform is great. But getting to actually meet those role models is even better and those are among the highlights of Northeastern State’s Jackson Washburn’s musical career.

“I’ve been able to meet famous trumpeters like Allen Vizzutti, Rex Richardson and Sean Jones over the years and that was really cool,” said Washburn, a fifth-year senior.

Jackson grew up in Talihina where his father was the band director at the high school, so music has always been a part of his life. He started playing the trumpet in the fifth grade. Jackson’s decision to attend Northeastern State came as he was winding up high school.

“I went to a music convention and all the colleges from around the state had representatives there. The NSU folks felt the most welcoming and personable compared to the schools like OU and OSU. So that played a major part in my decision to come to NSU plus some of my family had attended there.”

At NSU Washburn plays in the RiverHawks marching band (including a stint playing the bass drum), as well as trumpet ensembles that perform at special events like Veterans Day ceremonies. Jackson’s real love is jazz. He is majoring in Jazz Studies and plays in the NSU Jazz Band and in jazz combos.

In addition to the trumpet, Washburn also plays the euphonium, also known as the baritone, and is learning to play the piano. In addition, Jackson has also won three Academic Achievement Awards while at NSU. After he graduates this spring, Washburn’s plans are flexible.

“There are several options I might pursue after graduation. I’m thinking I’ll do freelance gigs like weddings or cruise ships and so forth and eventually get my master’s in jazz studies.”

Jackson Washburn’s advice to high school music students looking for their next challenge.

“If you like music, especially playing jazz, Northeastern State is the place to come!”
