Leadership can sometimes be the result of a company’s hire or the outcome of an election. But for Zane White, the definition and ultimate result of leadership is something that molds a group of individuals into a team.

“You don’t buy leadership, you have to earn it through the example of your actions, not just the words you say,” explained the 2022 Durant High School graduate who was awarded the Fellowship of Christian Athletes All-State honor. “An effective leader empowers others to do more than what they think they can achieve whether it’s their athletic or academic achievements or their walk with Christ.”

White’s leadership by example has been demonstrated during his four-year athletic career with the Lions. On the football field playing tight end, White’s efforts while wearing jersey number 88 resulted in being chosen by his teammates as team captain the final two seasons and he was chosen to the Class 5A All-Star by class team as a senior. A four-year member of the Lions golf team, Zane qualified for the Class 5A state tournament three times.  By earning a 3.9 grade point average, White has maintained membership in the National Honor Society. 

And, according to Zane, his involvement with the Durant huddle of FCA has been a game changer.  

“FCA has helped me build a bridge between my athletics and personal life and it has helped me be a better Christian,” Zane said in a voice of humility. “It’s afforded me the opportunity to make a positive impact as well as a place to share my faith.” 

His mentor on the gridiron shared his thoughts on the impact of White.

“I haven’t found many players that have changed more mentally and physically than Zane. He developed himself into a great leader and player,” said Durant head football coach Todd Vargas. “Zane is a great young man of character and humility. I am proud to have been part of his life.”

The Lions golf coach also had high praise for his four-year player.

“He has been the leader of our team,” said Tanner Dupree. “His play on the golf course led the way to our best state tournament finish since 2012. I’m certainly going to miss the leadership, maturity as well as the abilities he brought to the team.”

As he hangs up his football cleats and stores away his golf clubs to prepare for entering the U.S. Navy, Zane White reminds everyone to never give up on your dreams.

“You’re never alone, there’s always someone willing to listen, to help you in every situation. Jesus Christ walks with you through the fires of life as well as when times are good.”
