Buffalo Valley’s Cyrena Bull – Athlete Spotlight – Presented By AJ Butcher Block

Cyrena Bull is a whirling dervish of activity in her native Buffalo Valley community. She plays softball (though she is taking this spring off from slow pitch) and is captain of the cheer team. She is also on the Academic Team, in 4H where she shows goats and has done quilting, does some tutoring, and is president of the area chapter of the Choctaw Youth Advisory Board.

“One of my softball friends got me involved in YAB at the end of my seventh-grade year and I love doing it. We do a lot of community service work like recently we passed out water at the Trail of Tears Walk as well as projects at Christmas and Thanksgiving.”

She started in cheer around the fifth grade and got involved in softball from T-ball on with her dad coaching including a season playing pee wee ball with the boys when there wasn’t a coach-pitch softball team around.

Her role models range from people around her to a college athlete.

“I admire my teammate Khloe Haile this year. She’s a great leader and has taught me a lot of leadership skills and helped me improve my game. My favorite college player is Grace Green from OU. I met her at a fellowship night a couple of months ago and she talked about the fact that even though she didn’t get to play a lot, she still supported her team and was doing her part and that really inspired me to be the best teammate I could be.”

Her parents have also been a big influence in her life as well.

“Of course, my dad coached me when I was little, and I learned a lot from him, and my mom has home schooled me for a few years and helped a lot with my studies and they’re both always there to back me up and support me.”

Though she’s just a junior, Cyrena already has a couple of highlights that she’ll remember for a long time.

“I got to cheer this year when our boys’ basketball team went to the state tournament. Cheering in the Big House was an amazing experience and then last fall when our fast pitch team went to state for the time ever and we got to play at Hall of Fame Stadium was really cool.”

Oh, and did we tell you about the singing group? On top of everything else, Cyrena is part of a family group known as the Heydenreich Family that sings at churches in the four-state area. You’ll have to look quickly to catch sight of Cyrena Bull before she’s off to her next activity.
