Lamarcus Davis – Hugo High School – Presented by Jay Hodge Dodge

No matter the time of year you’ll find Hugo junior Lamarcus Davis busy in some sport. In the fall it’s football where he’s a two-year starter as a wide receiver and strong safety. Then from there it’s right into basketball and later in the winter he’ll do powerlifting. Then in the spring he’ll be on the Golden Buffaloes track team where he runs sprints and some of the relays. Last year he went to state in the long jump but says he’ll pass on that this year because it takes a toll on his knees. And then he says he’ll go back to baseball this year after being away.

“I like football the best because I can be aggressive and I like tackling people,” said Davis. “My sports highlight so far came in football this year when I made 30 tackles in our playoff game.” As basketball gets underway, Lamarcus’ coach Darnell Shanklin says that his role will need to change a little this year.

“Lamarcus had a good year for us as a sophomore playing defense and rebounding but this year we need him to be a little more offensive-minded,” said Shanklin. “I want to see him put the ball on the floor and use his athletic ability to get around people and attack the basket and hit his free throws when he gets fouled.”

Davis recognizes the need for the change and is working on it.

“I know I have to show some more offense and that’s just something I’ve got to accept and gain some confidence in my shooting and driving. Rebounding and defense are my strengths because I can jump high and be more aggressive, but I’ve gotten in foul trouble the first few games, so I’ve got to learn to keep my hands off folks,” he chuckled.

During the summer, Lamarcus attended some basketball camps and played on a Choctaw team in Georgia as well as working on his skills on his own and hitting the weight room and with two returning seniors and himself he feels the team could be good this year.

“I think we could have a good season ahead of us. We’ve got several guys back and some of the young guys are really stepping up.”

In his spare time Lamarcus likes to follow athletes like Steph Curry, Lebron James and Michael Jordan online and watch their highlights.
