Quick Hits:

Sulphur will have its hands full traveling to Whitesboro, Texas on September 16th. The Bearcats finished 9-5 in 2021 and made it to the Class 3A-Division-I quarterfinals where they wre eliminated by state runner-up Brock.

Heritage Hall is on the regular season schedule for the first time since 1975. The teams have met twice in the playoffs since including the Chargers 50-18 win in the 2018 Class 3A state title game.

OFFENSE

Entering his 50th year of coaching, Jim Dixon, looks to lead his Sulphur Bulldogs to another successful season in class 3A. Last year the Bulldogs made it to the quarterfinal round of the playoffs before falling short to Lincoln Christian. In 2022 they return seven offensive starters to their single back scheme. The biggest question for the Bulldogs this season is who will be taking snaps after former starter, Reese Ratchford, graduated. A quarterback competition in the offseason may lead into the early weeks of fall. Expect running back Daniel Amay (5-11, 180, Sr.) to be a workhorse and heavily relied upon to handle the majority of the offensive workload coming out of the backfield. Quince Borders (6-3, 270, Sr.) is an experienced lineman with good size, balance, and toughness that makes him a force from the point of attack. Wide receiver Brytan Gaddy (6-0, 170, Jr.) will be a reliable outside target that can get open and make things happen with the ball in his hands.

DEFENSE

The Bulldogs also return seven starters on defense and want to be aggressive in their 4-3 base formation. Caden Cole (6-3, 240, So.) has already been turning heads in the locker room and impressed the coaching staff on both sides of the ball. He is an excellent lineman with great potential that continues to expand as he gains more and more experience. Coy Myers (6-0, 190, Jr.) is a threat off the edge and can be a menace when he gets an open path to the quarterback. Cash Matlack (5-9, 160, So.) and Austin Garret (6-0, 190, So.) both showed flashes their freshman year and will look to expand their skill set, strength, and instincts in 2022.
