BOYS
Coach: Darnell Shanklin
21-22 Record: 9-14
The Buffs were young last year but lost only one senior so veteran coach Darnell Shanklin, now in his 35th year as part of the Hugo program, is optimistic as the new season is about to unfold. “We’re expecting a really good year after graduating only senior off last year’s team. We will still be young, but we should be deep,” said Shanklin. Carrying the load for Hugo will be senior Jamarian Brown. “He was the guy with the target on his back last year and still averaged around 16 points a game. He has great potential and has the ability to put the ball in the hole,” said Shanklin.
Brown had a taste of success as a member of the Hugo team that went 23-2 and made it to the state semifinals two years ago and he hails from a basketball-rich family that features a brother and uncle that were both All-Staters at Hugo. Another senior that will provide strong leadership for this still-youthful team is Dontre Carter. “Dontre is a hard worker that is a great example of what it takes to be a Hugo Buffalo basketball player,” said Shanklin. “He’s on the academic and e-sports teams and also works a job part time.” Shanklin is also looking for valuable contributions from a pair of freshmen in Quincy Shelton and Lorenzo King. “Quincy is a freshman with good athletic ability and a true gym rat who can play the 1, 2, or 3 guard spots. Lorenzo is a strong freshman guard that can score the ball and handle any of the guard spots,” said the Buffalo head coach.
