Tishomingo’s Emily Austin – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Vision Bank

At the core of Tishomingo High School’s basketball court, Emily Austin, a dedicated junior, is prepping for a season filled with passion, teamwork and personal growth.

Coach Lambert, a mentor and motivator, holds a special place in Emily’s heart as her favorite coach: “She pushes me to be better every day. She also makes me want to continue playing the sports I love.” The impact of Coach Lambert goes beyond the court, fostering a drive to excel not just in sports but in all aspects of life.

Teammates play a crucial role in basketball, and for Emily, Cadence Merchant stands out as a source of admiration and support. “She is still my biggest fan now even when she’s in college,” Emily said. “I’m trying to fill her shoes and be the leader she was.”

In the realm of academics, Ms. Barnes, Emily’s favorite teacher, emerges as a guiding force. “She has never given up on me and pushes me to be a better me every day,” Emily expressed.

To prepare for the upcoming season, Emily emphasizes the importance of early engagement with basketball activities, focusing on physical conditioning and skill enhancement. “Getting shots up, working down low, going over offenses and giving the best I can every day is going to help equip me for this season,” she noted, showcasing her commitment to excellence.

Beyond the tangible skills, basketball has instilled in Emily a valuable life lesson – the power of perseverance and hard work: “Basketball has taught me that if you really set your mind on a goal and continue to work hard for that goal, you will either have your goal become a reality or you will take pride in knowing you gave your all.”

As the junior leader of the Tishomingo team, Emily aspires to foster unity and understanding among her teammates, emphasizing the essence of basketball as a team sport.

Looking beyond high school, Emily envisions a future in the beauty and wellness industry. “I want to go to a trade school to either be a cosmetologist, esthetician, and/or a massage therapist.”
