From baseball to football to student council, sophomore Malachi Sunagoowie is a clear representation of what it means to be a Hartshorne Miner. Active in his community while excelling in his athletic pursuits, Malachi, is an all-around student athlete. 

With a passion for both football and baseball, Malachi thrives in challenging positions on the field, reflecting his determination and love for the game. “What motivates me is getting the opportunity to play the games that I love,” Malachi said. His dedication to sports shines through as he embraces the physical and mental challenges that come with being a multi-sport athlete.

When asked about his influences, Malachi credits his coaches and especially his mom for their impact on his life. “My mom is so mentally strong,” he said, highlighting her resilience as a source of inspiration.

Coach Bill Williams holds a special place in Malachi’s journey for instilling crucial lessons in mental strength. “He taught me how to build mental strength.”

Success for Malachi goes beyond the scoreboard; it’s about learning from experiences. “Learning how to leave the past in the past and staying calm.” Reflecting on his achievements, Malachi recalls hitting a walkoff homer against Wilburton during his freshman year and the excitement of back-to-back home playoff games in football. 

Rivalry games hold a special place in Malachi’s heart. “I always enjoy beating a rivalry team like Wilburton,” he admitted, showing his competitive edge and team spirit.

In practice, Malachi values his teammates like Hayden Morris, with whom he shares a bond of mutual support and encouragement. “We always pick each other up,” Malachi said.

Malachi recognizes Bailey Cummins for his exceptional work ethic, highlighting the dedication and commitment required to succeed in baseball.

Beyond athletics, Malachi serves as the president of the student council, showcasing his leadership skills and involvement in shaping his school community. Being a Hartshorne Miner is something Malachi holds dear. “Getting to represent myself and knowing that what I do and how I carry myself affects the whole community” is something he is aware of every time he dons the pick and shovel.

Looking ahead, Malachi aims to pursue higher education while continuing to play the sports he loves at the highest possible level.
