Head coach – Brad O’Steen
2021: 3-7
The Cougars defensive strengths include quickness and physicality at every position including nine returning starters. Caden Balthrop, who made 42 stops including three QB sacks, will play opposite Will Johnson (6-1, 185, So.) at defensive end while nose guard Logan Prince (5-9, 215, Sr.) brings strength to the three-man front. Quick to ball skills plus pass coverage talents make the Cougar linebacker unit effective where Fisher Marr (6-0, 193, Jr.) who made 55 tackles in 2021 joins Kaden Gallagher (5-11, 181, Sr.) who made 54 stops and George Maddox (6-2, 184, Jr.) who charted 70 tackles during his sophomore campaign. The nickel package in the secondary will include Xander Rhynes, Damontre Patterson, Andrew Hughes, Kolten Carlock (5-10, 160, So.) and Reed Samson (6-1, 165, Jr.) where each athlete employs their speed and seek talents to create consistent pass coverage as well as the ability to stop the run.The veteran roster will begin this year’s quest for success playing four of its first five games away from home including their first three encounters against Class 5A opponents before entering 4A-4 district play.“Experience is a definite plus for this year’s group and we’re still growing and learning,” said O’Steen. “The benefit of last year’s learning under fire gives us reason to believe that we will be in the mix for the district title in 2022.”
