Maysville Warriors “Circling the Track” – Presented by Winans Funeral Home

By Scott Metz

Coach Dace Lemieux is the track and field coach at Maysville High School.

When asked about the overall season for Maysville track, coach Lemieux said, “This season was an overall successful year for our track team. Our boys’ team was young overall and had to go through some growing pains throughout the season. Every meet our times continued to go down, so as a coach, that is all you can ask for when you have a younger group. Our 4×200 and 4×400 boys’ relays were the strongest relays throughout the season, and both finished top six in our regional at Alex.”

In terms of his expectations for the next season, coach Lemieux stated, “We will lose one senior boy, so I think we could be much stronger with what we have coming back. Bryce Shannon, Isaac Harris, and Josh Wilson will all be back for the three relays we run. Gavin Martin will be a sophomore hurdler that saw much improvement throughout the 2023 season. Bryce Shannon will look to build off his state qualifier season in the 400-meter dash which he ran at state with a pulled hamstring.”

So who does coach Lemieux believe will be the key players next season?

“Gavin Martin in the 110- and 300-meter hurdles I think could have a big year in 2024. Bryce Shannon in the 400-meter dash, Isaac Harris in the long jump, and Josh Wilson as a leg on our 4X100, 4X200, and 4X400 relays. All these young men gained so much experience throughout this season and I think all four could have big seasons that put them in the state meet.”

When asked what the challenges are for his team, coach Lemieux explained, “We were low on numbers this season which forced most of our male athletes to carry four events. We had to condition much harder than usual so that we could compete for medals at all the meets we attended. Injuries late in the year also hurt us. But all of this made our boys more battle tested, I think, and will only lead to more success in 2024. Our boys are going to use this summer to continue to train. They were not satisfied with how our 2023 season ended, so this will only make the 2024 season a must-watch.”
