Sulphur’s Justus Gilliam – Wrestling Spotlight – Presented by Vision Bank

In addition to being a committed student-athlete at Sulphur High School, Justus Gilliam is a formidable opponent on the wrestling mat. His path demonstrates both his physical skill and his unrelenting will to succeed in his sport and beyond.

Gilliam’s commitment extends across multiple domains. As he describes it, “Success comes when you completely buy in, trust the process and work hard every day.” This mindset underscores his approach to both academics and athletics, driving him to push his limits consistently.

With a deep-rooted motivation to carve his name in the books of athletic history, Gilliam aims to be the first in his family to secure a state championship in football and achieve a rare feat of becoming a two-time state champion in wrestling. His aspirations are not just personal but symbolic, reflecting the culmination of years of dedication and sacrifice.

In his pursuit of excellence, Gilliam finds inspiration from his father and brother, who serve as his guiding lights, pushing him to reach greater heights. He also acknowledges the profound impact of Randy Growall, a teacher whose mentorship has shaped him into the leader he is today.

Gilliam’s wrestling journey is punctuated by memorable moments, notably making it to the finals in wrestling as both a freshman and sophomore. However, his competitive spirit transcends individual rivalries. “Everyone,” he said, “because my goal is to win every time, no matter my opponent.”

Within his team, Gilliam finds camaraderie and shared dedication. He singles out teammate Brody Wallace as a driving force in practice, reflecting the collaborative drive that defines their wrestling program.

Beyond the mat, Gilliam’s involvement in the National Honor Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Football Leadership Council underscores his approach to personal and community development.

As he looks to the future, Gilliam sets his sights on playing football in college, a nod to his enduring commitment to his athletic pursuits. Representing Sulphur High School isn’t just about individual achievement for Justus Gilliam; it’s about embodying the spirit of his community and drawing strength from its unwavering support.
