Faith, family and culture are three of the well-known values of the Choctaw Nation.
Yet, the tradition and heritage of success have been made complete through the importance of accountability and integrity. It’s the combination of these five values that inspires Cruiz Martinez to find desire and dedication in every opportunity. “I understand that if you want to be successful, you must be willing to work for it,” explained the senior at Tishomingo High School. “In sports, as well as in everyday life if your desire is to be the best, you have to be willing to go all in and refuse to let any challenge keep you from accomplishing your dreams.”
In football, Cruiz plays running back and linebacker on the Indians football team here he tries to use his God given talents to set the example for success. “I’m pretty much a quiet person that tries to let my efforts and actions do all the talking,” Cruiz said while explaining his approach to leadership. “A true leader sets the example for others to follow and is always ready to help and do whatever it takes to find victory and happiness.”
Tishomingo coach Scott O’Hara admires the efforts of Cruiz to be a true leader, both on and off the field. “He has a confidence that is within him that makes everyone respect him without having to say anything,” said the Indians head football coach. “He’s a different type of leader, never needing to use his voice but everyone knows he is locked in.” Riding jet skis on Texhoma and going bass fishing whenever possible gives the 2024 senior something to smile about; still yet, it’s the opportunity to give back to others in his hometown that gives Cruiz an even higher level of joy.
“I work at the nursing home, Blue River Health Care and really enjoy helping the residents with any of their needs,” said Cruiz. “Going there has been a win/win for me. The people there just want someone to listen and the stories they’ve shared has helped me to find out about more about the traditions of the Choctaw people. It’s also helped me talk more.”
Through his own experiences, Cruiz Martinez admires the influence of the Choctaw Nation. “The medical services that Choctaws make available have helped me when I was hurt playing football,” Cruiz said referring to an ankle injury he sustained. “The extensive rehab program has helped me get back into the game.” His journey is far from done as Cruiz wants to continue playing football in college as well as earning a degree in occupational safety with a career in HVAC or as an electrician. When the time comes for Cruiz to turn in his number-2 jersey and graduate next spring, he
hopes that, like the Choctaws, his actions have made a difference.
“Because of my elders sacrifices, the traditions of the past have given me opportunities to succeed,” he said explaining his own dedication and passion to everything he does. “I’ve tried to bring a positive change to my hometown through my willingness to work. I hope that I can leave a legacy that others will know that I did everything I could to make things better than I found them.”
Or in simple terms, Cruiz Martinez loves life and lives it the Choctaw Way.
