Being a good leader is important to Antlers senior Kasidy Young, a three-year starter for the Lady Bearcats basketball team.
“She’s our top defensive player and main ball handler and runs the offense for us,” said head coach Brian Wingfield. “She leads by example for the most part but she’s not afraid to speak up and get her teammates in line.”
Kasidy also plays third base on the fast pitch softball team and has played both sports since around fourth grade.
“My dad loves baseball and softball so I’ve been playing for about as long as I can remember. My siblings all played baseball or softball but I’m the only one who has also played basketball. I think I like playing basketball a little more because it pushes me harder.”
For Kasidy being a good leader goes back to earlier high school years and a senior named Elly Clayton.
“She knew how to talk to people and how to get them to do something without being too bossy and also helped people out if they needed it. I’ve also seen plenty of seniors who didn’t know how to really lead other people and I try to stay away from those styles of leadership. I set high standards in making sure I do things right like when the coach says to do something, I set an example of how to do it.”
Kasidy credits her parents with pushing her to be her best and as the main motivators in her life and says she’s proud of the fact that the Lady Bearcats have been district champs in basketball every year she’s been there. While she’s not sure what she will tackle after high school, she does know how she would like to be remembered when she leaves Antlers.
“I would like folks to think that I was always positive, was a had worker and gave it my all every time in either softball or basketball,” said Young who is also a member of the National Honor Society and the Business Professional Associates chapter at Antlers.
