OFFENSE
The Wildcats return a solid nucleus of six starters from last year’s squad with the hopes of getting back on the winning side of the ledger in 2022. O-line will be the heart of the offense with three big-bodied seniors led by VYPE Top 100 pick Caleb Perry (6-2, 320, Sr.) who graded at 89 percent in his blocking assignments over last season. “Caleb has started since he was a freshman on both sides of the ball. He’s a hard worker who leaves it all on the field,” said head coach Nathan Hill. Also back will be center Chet Barnett (5-11, 250, Sr.) and guard Isaiah Rodriguez (6-0, 275, Sr.) both of whom also graded out in the high 80s. Running back will be handled again by Jody Trevathan (5-10, 175, Sr.) who rushed for 650 yards and six touchdowns last season. Cade Cometti (6-0, 185, Jr.) is a versatile player who is at home either as a running back or wide out where he had 150 receiving yards in 2021. The Wildcats quarterback will be Rylie Gold (5-9, 170, Jr.) who will call the signals in Coalgate’s spread, one back, double tight end set. District 2A-4 will have a different look this season with the addition of Lexington, Kingston, Holdenville, and Atoka to the lineup.
DEFENSE
There are seven familiar faces back for the Wildcats to run Hill’s 4-3 smashmouth defense. Perry, who had 56 tackles, a sack and an interception last year, will anchor the defensive front with Barnett, who picked up 30 tackles in 2021, and Jody Trevathan, who Hill calls his quarterback on defense, at linebacker. Jody’s brother Tristan Trevathan (6-0, 170, So.) who had a good freshman year with 20 tackles and an interception, will line up as a cornerback in the secondary where he’s paired with Cometti and Gold will be one of the safeties. Also look for Cord Coffee to land somewhere on the defense and well as the offense. “Cord has worked hard in the weight room this off-season. He’s a yes sir, no sir kind of guy and will be a big help in with the younger athletes on how to do things right,” said Hill. This group has a special place for Hill as they prepare for the new season. “When I came to Coalgate this senior group were just freshmen and it’s been fun watching them grow into men. I’m excited about this group.”
