BOYS
Coach: Darnell Shanklin
20-21 Record: 23-2
Coming off a tremendous season last year, head coach Darnell Shanklin said that he was going to use his 20-plus years of coaching experience to coax the best out of a younger squad this year. “We will be young, and we have to redefine roles,” he said. “We have several guys who have the physical ability to have a good year. Let’s see if they are mature enough to handle everything that will come their way.” The Buffaloes are going to be led by Jamarion Brown (5-10, Jr.) at the guard position, and Coach Shanklin said he is a quiet young man who simply gets the job done; G’Mariyon Wallace (6-3, Sr.) playing forward who Shanklin said had good ball handling skills and plays well in transition; and Amarion Maytubby (5-8 Jr.) also playing guard and who was described by his coach as a player who does his job every day without flash, and who never showboats after scoring.
GIRLS
Coach: Chris Scott
20-21 Record: 15-10
After making a trip to the state tournament in 19-20, Chris Scott said his team had the experience coming back to make it there yet again this season. “We have four starters coming back from a state tourney team last year,” he said. “We have a good group of girls who are willing to work hard and who want to win.” Scott said Kaydrin Scott (5-9, Sr.) is a combo guard with low post skills who can hit the mid-range pull up; Ashia Jordan (5-5, Jr.) averaged 9.0 points and 5.0 rebounds for the Lady Buffaloes last season as a guard; and Don’nai Akins (5-5, Jr.) also added 6.0 points and 2.0 rebounds in the guard spot. Rounding it out for Scott is Sha’tiya Akins (5-5, Sr.) who also added 2.0 points and 2.0 assists per game last season.
