OFFENSE
With eight returning starters coming off a 7-4 season, Hugo looks to be a solid contender in a revamped District 2A-6 for the upcoming season. Back calling the signals under center will be Landon Lemmons (6-2, 180, Sr.) who passed for 1,000 yards and rushed for 200 more. “After taking over at QB late in his sophomore season, Landon really developed last year. He did a phenomenal job of commanding the offense and proved that he can be threat both passing and running,” said second-year head coach Krystopher Gross. Also returning after a phenomenal sophomore season where he rushed for 1,300 yards and 14 touchdowns is Lamarcus Davis (6-0, 170, Jr.). “This young man is a freak of nature,” said Gross. He played some safety and quarterback his freshman year and had a breakout year last season that included six return touchdowns.” Davis will be closely watched early as he had to spend a quiet summer after suffering a non-surgical knee injury during track season. Another key part of the Buff offense will be Aden “Fuzz” Parish (6-2, 245, Sr.) who had 400 yards on the ground last year. Gross will also be keeping an eye on incoming freshman Quincy Shelton wo runs the 100 in under :12 seconds and “can jump out of gym and is hard to touch in the open field.” Another element in the offense could be junior Dashon Sims who has worked hard and has patiently waited his turn to show what he can do according to Gross.
DEFENSE
The Buffalo 3-4 defense will be spearheaded by Aden Parish and Caleb Joe (6-2, 240, Sr.) at the linebacker spots. Davis will return at a safety spot where he had 52 tackles and three interceptions last year. Hugo returns eight starters on this side of the ball as well in what Gross describes as a downhill defense. District competition will be slightly different this year with redistricting. Spiro and Heavener will replace Atoka and Hartshorne as district opponents. Having made the playoffs last year and with a solid group returning, Gross is optimistic about the upcoming campaign. “With eight returning starters on each side of the ball and with speed, size and depth on our side, we look to have a successful 2022 season,” said Gross.
