Lamarcus Davis has already started turning the heads of some college football coaches after he rushed for over 1300 yards in his sophomore season last year and played safety for the second year for the Buffaloes. He also plays basketball, played soccer until there was no team this year, and runs track where he qualified for state this past spring. But for the time being there’s a slight bump in the road for the junior-to-be.
“I injured my knee doing the high jump during track and while it doesn’t require surgery, I was told that I would have to chill during the summer and rest it and hopefully it will be well enough to go by the time football starts.”
Even though he admits that while he enjoys track, he does it mostly to help improve his speed for football which is his first love.
“It was the first sport I really played and I’m kind of passionate about it. In the third grade some of my friends started playing so I got interested. I was good at it, but I was scared of getting hit, so I just decided I would run fast so I wouldn’t get hit. My dad played high school ball, but he wasn’t around much so everything I do is for him. My mom is my main motivator, and I can talk to her about anything.”
Lamarcus runs the 100 and 200-meter sprints, the 4X100 relay and the high jump and his track coach Krystopher Gross sees a bright future for him if he sticks with that sport.
“He came in first in several meets this year and qualified for state and if he fully recovers from his injury, I think he’ll have a good chance of winning state in the high jump next year. He’s just an outstanding athlete and phenomenal kid.”
Thus far, the summer has been a little disconcerting for this athlete of action.
“It’s been really frustrating so far because I’m an active kid and I can’t stand just sitting. I went to watch at basketball camp the other day and it was really hard to watch and not be able to be out there. I can do some upper body workouts but nothing that involves my legs so that’s at least something.”
Keeping a positive mindset, Lamarcus has already set himself some goals for football season.
“I want to rush for more yards next year and become the defensive player of the year and eventually one of the top five defensive players in the state.”
