Playing baseball is sort of a family tradition in Seth Springfield’s home.
“I grew up watching my older brother Mason play ball and I ended up practicing a lot with the older guys, so I guess I just come by it naturally. My dad has been the motivator for us. He’s coached me up since I was young. He bought us a batting cage when I was about 10 and even today I’ll come home from practice and take more reps.”
Seth is a junior and a three-year starter for the Rams and without a senior on the team, has been a top performer and leader for the team according to coach Michael Clay.
“Seth is a gamer. He’s been one of our top hitters since he was a freshman. He’s a clutch hitter and gives 110 percent all the time. He’s played several positions for us but has settled in as our catcher which I think fits him well because he’s a fiery-type guy. He’s put in a lot of off-season work and is bigger and stronger and I expect him to have a great spring.”
While Seth admired the play of his older brother, his role model is a well-known major leaguer.
“Mike Trout is the guy I’ve looked up to. Not only do I think he’s one of the best players ever, but I like the way he carries himself and hustles all the time which you don’t see a lot in the big leagues anymore.”
!– /22198608069/body –>Since the Rams are without any seniors, Springfield has found himself having to take up some of the team leadership responsibility.
“I’m a pretty vocal guy and I think my role is to keep the energy on the team up. I’m always the loud one and when someone gets down, I try to talk them up. I don’t like leaders who talk the talk but can’t walk the walk,” said Springfield who is in the National and Oklahoma Honor Societies.
Although there are lots of memorable moments for a high school athlete, Seth has one from last year that really stands out.
“My biggest thrill was the fall of my sophomore year when I hit a game-winning homer in regionals in extra innings against Amber-Pocasset which kept our season alive, and we went on to the state tournament that year.”
