Hartshorne’s Jayda Moore – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by BancFirst McAlester

Defined by her coach as someone whose motor never tires, sophomore Jayda Moore has a desire to do whatever it takes to be successful, on the basketball court and in her hometown of Hartshorne.

After the Lady Miners reached the Class 2A state basketball tournament only to exit the Big House after the first round, Moore found inspiration in the setback by the continued improvement of her teammates as well as her own talents.

“We’ve got everybody back and we all knew that we have to get better,” said Moore who averaged 14 points per game as the Lady Miners point guard. “Running track provided another opportunity for us to improve our conditioning.”

Competing in individual events including the 400 and 800m races, Jayda joined with her four basketball teammates, to make up the Hartshorne girls track team in the 4×400 and 4x800m relay.

A two-year starter in coach Shane Hackler’s lineup, Moore admits that basketball is her sport of choice.

“I grew up around the game when my dad (Patrick) coached at Riverside Indian School,” said Jayda. “Whenever I can get in the gym, I’m there. It’s where I feel at home.”

Hackler confirms that Jayda’s efforts are an inspiration for her teammates.

“She’s self-motivated to be a success on and off the court and puts in the extra effort to improve daily. Jayda also gets her teammates to work outside of practice-that’s priceless,” said Hackler.

The impact of Jayda’s winning spirit carries over to more than just sports as a member of the student souncil and FCCLA groups at Hartshorne including the “sock drive for kids.”

Jayda defines her efforts…never being satisfied.

“Competitive is who I am and as a leader you have to be willing to step up and take the risk, take the tough shot,” Jayda said with passion and emphasis. “Our standards at Hartshorne are really high and I want everyone to know that they can count on me to do whatever it takes to find success and happiness while reaching our goals. If you want to be a champion, there’s plenty of work still to be done.”

Simply said, Jayda Moore strives to be a game changer in sports and in everyday life.

“I hope that my actions will set the right example for my teammates and that the little ones around town to look up to me as well.”
