“Back to the Weight Room” Presented by Kennedy Eyecare

After spending the last eight years in an administrative role, Austin Maddux is returning to a coaching role for the McAlester Buffaloes as the new strength and conditioning coach.

“I like taking a kid and getting everything out of him or her and making them a better version of themselves and they learn the discipline and importance of the weight room,” said Maddux. “Right now, I’m trying to meet with the coaches and explain my philosophy to them and how we’re going to do things. I believe that it’s not just about lifting weights but also working on movement patterns and systems of energy and things that are sports specific.”

Coach Maddux spent three years at Panama and a year at Crooked Oak ang Hugo as a football assistant and the strength and conditioning coach before coming to McAlester 11 years ago.

“I started as an assistant football coach and in charge of powerlifting for three years and then moved to administration. When this position came open, I applied and I think the transition will be easy because I already know all the coaches and how things work here in McAlester.”

Maddux is married to his wife Erika with two daughters, Erindy and Elliana and a son Townes all in the McAlester school system.

“McAlester is one of the bigger towns in southeast Oklahoma, but it has a real small town feel the way everybody supports everything we do in the schools, not just athletics.”
