McAlester’s Alex Dooney Athlete Spotlight Presented by Rib Crib

In the hallowed halls of McAlester High School, where academic pursuits intertwine with the rhythmic bounce of a basketball, Junior Alex Dooney, a formidable presence both on the court and in the classroom.

His journey is a testament to a life seamlessly woven with basketball and academic excellence. “My entire life has revolved around basketball and school. From a young age, my parents helped me form the necessary habits to be a successful student athlete,” Alex shared, emphasizing the importance of straight A’s and dedicated gym time.

As the son of a coach, the court was Alex’s playground, with the awe-inspiring moves of his father’s players igniting a spark: “I remember seeing all of his players being able to do things on the court that left me in awe. I wanted to replicate all the moves that they could do.”

Inspiration found a face in NBA star Steph Curry, a role model for guards like Alex. “Being an undersized guard, it is inspiring to see a small player be able to dominate the game the way he has,” he reflected.

Highlighting a memorable sports moment, Alex takes us back to a pivotal game against Fort Towson during his sophomore year at Rock Creek. Amidst the chaos of a last-minute brawl, he coolly sank a shot to tie the game, showcasing resilience under pressure.

Yet, the journey hasn’t been without challenges. As a coach’s kid, Alex faces heightened expectations and pressure, a test he navigates with cool determination. “Maintaining my cool with all of that pressure has proved to be difficult for me at times,” he said.

The transformative power of teamwork is evident in Alex’s journey, taking him from a shy child to an outgoing individual. “Being a part of a team has helped me to step outside my comfort zone. And now, I am a lot more of an outgoing person,” he revealed.

In the realm of mentorship, Alex acknowledges his father’s pivotal role in his athletic evolution. “My dad has helped me a ton throughout recent years,” he stated.

As the final buzzer of high school approaches, Alex envisions a future at the University of Oklahoma, alongside friends, delving into the world of social media content creation.
