McAlester High School baseball player Gunner Hodgell is a living example of perseverance and fortitude, both on and off the field. “I’ve grown up playing sports my whole life, and they have truly impacted me in the best way possible. They taught me hard work and determination and to never give up no matter how hard it gets, and I truly believe that carried over into the classroom.”
Inspired by his parents, both former softball and baseball players, Gunner’s passion for the game was kindled at a young age. “I would say that my parents inspired me to play my sport. I’ve always looked up to them and always wanted to follow in their footsteps,” he said.
Gunner’s high school journey has been punctuated by a significant moment: “The most memorable moment in my high school career so far would have to be my first varsity start last year. Putting that uniform on and taking the field for the first time is a feeling I will definitely never forget.”
Overcoming challenges has been an integral part of Gunner’s sports journey. “I would say the biggest challenge I’ve faced in my sports journey would be confidence. I’ve always had a lot of self-doubt and lack of confidence in myself, but I’ve overcome that by just having the mentality that I am the best player out there even if I’m actually not. I just have to trust my ability and instincts to get my job done.”
The influence of teamwork has left a mark on Gunner’s personal growth and character development. “Being part of a team has definitely helped me to put others first more than myself. It has helped my personal growth and character development by truly helping me to be a more selfless person and to care about others more,” he reflected.
As for his plans after high school, Gunner remains open to the possibilities. “I’m still uncertain of my plans after high school. All I know is that I would love to play college baseball, but right now I’m taking life one day at a time and just trusting God,” he affirmed.
