In sports, mentors and teammates play an invaluable role in shaping not only an athlete’s skills but also their character. For Sophie Eaton, a spirited cheerleader at McAlester High School, it’s the people around her that have impacted her most.
Erin Bradish, her favorite coach, has been instrumental in her journey. “She helped me improve not only as a cheerleader, but as a person,” Sophie said. “I will never forget the influence she has had in my life!”
However, Sophie’s journey is not just about the guidance from her coach. It’s also about the strength of her cheer squad. “I feel as though I have always had very supportive teammates who encouraged me to push myself to be my very best,” she said.
In the classroom, Donna Curry, one of Sophie’s favorite teachers, has been a beacon of support. “She would lift me up when I was feeling down or having a bad day, and always encouraged me to strive for excellence.”
Cheerleading has taught Sophie a wealth of leadership skills that extend far beyond the sidelines: “I use these skills not only in cheer but at school and in all my other extracurricular activities! I believe the skills I am learning now will help me to be more successful in the future.”
This season, Sophie hopes to serve as an advocate for school spirit, motivating her peers to support their athletes and teams. Her commitment to boosting school spirit is an important role that cheerleaders play.
Looking ahead, Sophie aspires for her cheer team to attend nationals, a dream she’s had since she began her cheerleading journey.
After high school, Sophie has plans to pursue a degree relating to the medical field with dreams of starting her own clinic in the future. Her journey in cheerleading has not only prepared her for the challenges of her chosen field but has also molded her into a passionate and determined young leader.
