Pittsburg’s Colton Scott – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Oklahoma School of Welding

As senior Colton Scott finishes out his final months at Pittsburg High School, his perseverance will be something to be used as an example for those who follow in his footsteps as explained by his basketball coach Jim Jenson. “Colton is a hard worker and shows up every day and gives it his all. He started the year on the bench for us but through his hard work he worked his way into a starting spot by the second half of the season,” said Jenson. “He wasn’t a big vocal leader as our only senior but he spoke up when he needed to and I was really proud of his leadership role. He’s a great role model and we’ll sure miss him next year.”

Colton played shooting guard this past season and says he likes playing basketball, which is his only sport, because he likes being part of a team. One of his favorite players is former Oklahoma Sooner and now NBA standout Trae Young. “I just like the way he plays. He can shoot from anywhere even with people on him and he seems like a really good team player,” said Colton.

The pandemic-challenged season of 2020-21 turned out to be the best for the Panthers and Scott in his four years at Pittsburg as they turned in their first winning season in a while with a 17-6 mark and were just a whisker away from making it to the state tournament. “We were unbeaten in post-season going into the area tournament,” recalled Scott. “We played Lomega in the first round and lost by three and then lost by two in overtime to Red Oak in the second game. We had a new coach this year and it took a bit to get adjusted but we finally started meshing late in the season and ended up with a great year.”

Colton is active on the 4H quiz bowl team and takes part in their fishing team and shooting sports. And when he’s not doing those things or playing basketball, he likes to hunt, work out, and hang with his friends. Although nothing is definite yet for life beyond high school, Colton says he’s leaning towards attending Carl Albert State College and studying engineering. “I guess after I leave here, I’d like to be remembered as a hard worker who played hard and did my best academically,” said Scott.
