SAVANNA BULLDOGS
Coach: RICK CHERRY
1-9
OFFENSE
Coach Rick Cherry begins his fourth year at the helm of the Bulldogs program by returning a solid nucleus of players on both sides of the ball with varying degrees of experience. The guys to watch on offense will be receivers Kinyon Burge (5-8, 160, Sr.) and Ryan Ward (5-11, 170, Jr.), tailback Garrett Ward (5-11, 170, Jr.) who runs hard and gives it everything he has and returning in the line will be guard Brett Dickens (5-9, 190, Sr.). The Bulldogs will operate out of a one-back spread shotgun formation with the emphasis on getting the ball to the outside quickly if possible. One of the main tasks of summer practice will be settling on a new quarterback to run the offense for Savanna.
DEFENSE
The 4-2 defense will be anchored by Dickens and Caleb Whitfield (6-0, 220, Sr.) at linebacker and in the line Cade Smith (5-9, 230, Sr.) will be one of the mainstays of the Savanna defense. “We want to find out what the opposition does best and stop it,” said Cherry. “We want to protect the gaps and make them snap the ball several times.”
Cherry says he expects better play from his line on both sides of the ball this year but there are still lots of unanswered questions for this coaching staff as they prepare to go into the 2023 football season.
