Wilburton Cheer Team – Presented by Fenton Nissan of McAlester

By Payton Moody

The Wilburton Diggers Cheer Squad has been gearing up for a thrilling season, led by Coach Brittany Grossnicklaus. With an unwavering commitment to excellence and a tight-knit team, they are ready to rally behind their teams and ignite school spirit.

Teams are only as good as its leaders and Grossnicklaus acknowledges her seniors. “We have standout leaders in Seniors Madison Littlejohn and Harley Ward,” Grossnicklaus said. “They are always willing to jump in and help their teammates and never miss practice or events.”

Their journey to excellence began during the summer, where they bonded as a unit. The squad attended the UCA Camp at OU in June, facing high-stress situations that only strengthened their unity. “Our team grew as a unit over the summer,” Grossnicklaus reflected.

To prepare for the upcoming football and basketball seasons, the Wilburton cheer team’s diligent efforts started as early as April. They worked tirelessly throughout the summer, attending Summer Pride workouts and honing their skills during weekly practices. “We asked our girls to attend Summer Pride workouts, and we continued with our weekly practices,” Grossnicklaus shared.

As they looked ahead to the seasons, their primary goals were clear: “Our goals are to support the teams for which we are cheering and keep the crowd involved in our games.”

Excitement bubbled within the squad for the games against their rivals from over the mountain, Hartshorne. “We are always excited about the games that involve our foes,” Grossnicklaus said.

Fostering unity among the cheerleaders was another key focus. Grossnicklaus and Assistant Coach Hale worked diligently to build team spirit. “We foster team spirit among our cheerleaders by getting them little tokens of appreciation throughout the season, asking them to support each other in all that we do,” Grossnicklaus said.

For aspiring cheerleaders watching their journey, Grossnicklaus had a piece of advice: “If it’s something they want to do, they will have to put themselves out there. If they don’t make it one year, try again!”

The Wilburton Diggers Cheer Squad is poised to bring their energy, unity and relentless spirit to the upcoming seasons, serving as a beacon of school pride and unwavering support for their teams.
