OFFENSE
There’s a new sheriff in town for the Wilburton Diggers in 2022 as Troy Bullard moves up to take on the head coaching duties of a team that will be short on experience. Bullard will run the team out of the Pistol offense but exactly who will direct that offense at quarterback is still up in the air. One possibility might be Braiden Grossnicklaus (6-1, 155, Fr.) who Bullard describes as a versatile athlete who will be a receiver if not quarterback. Most of the offense will center on Troy Clark (6-0, 185, Jr.) at running back. Clark carried 67 times last year for 340 yards with five touchdowns. Sophomore Hunter Pate (5-7, 190) will also get his chance to carry the mail. The offensive line is in good hands with the return of Brendon Miller (6-1, 280, Sr.) and Gunner Hawkins (6-1, 190, So.). District 2A-6 will see a couple of changes with this year’s realignment as Hartshorne and Atoka are gone, though the Diggers will play Hartshorne in a non-district matchup, replaced by Heavener and Spiro.
DEFENSE
Just four starters are back for the Diggers on defense leaving a lot of holes to fill for the new head coach. The D-line will be led by Zyan Mafakidze (6-2, 240, Jr.) who had 44 tackles in 2021 along with three sacks. Linebackers will be Clark who had 46 tackles and a pair of sacks last year and Billy Brooks (5-10, 175, Jr.) who registered 38 tackles last season and will double as the Diggers punter. Sophomore Floyd Clark (6-0, 150), who had 27 tackles last season, will be the lockdown man in the secondary for Wilburton. The Diggers open the season with a pair of home games and then spend the rest of September on the road.
