9 Qs with Broken Bow golfer Bevin Strawn – Presented by Sherrill’s Pharmacy & Gifts

VYPE: What we’re your goals for the season? How are those coming ?

Bevin: My goal for this season has been to break 100, and I’ve gotten extremely close so far this season with a score of 103.

VYPE: What has your sport taught you that you use in your daily life?

Bevin: Golf has taught me that you always have to work hard. You can’t just go to one practice and expect to get better overnight. Golf is a slow improvement sport, and to improve you have to prove that you want it by consistently working and trying.

VYPE: Who is your favorite teacher from any grade and why?

Bevin: My favorite teacher would have to be my freshman biology teacher Mr Cox. I couldn’t tell you how many times my friends and I have gone into his class at random times just to tell him about what’s going on in our lives.

VYPE: Who inspires you and why?

Bevin: The person who inspires me most is Taylor Swift. There’s no doubt that she’s my favorite artist, and everyone who knows me knows that, but throughout her career she’s gone through so much, in both her personal and professional life, and despite all of that she’s still such an authentic person. She’s still breaking records daily despite being on her 10th studio album. She inspires me to be myself and not care whether other people like me or not.

VYPE: What teammate has left the biggest impression on you and why?

Bevin: The teammate who has left the biggest impression on me would have to be Jillian Underwood. My favorite memories from last season were going  to the course with her and playing golf, just to play golf.  My scores were always better when I played with her because she truly enjoyed the sport, and never let bad shots ruin her future ones. Her positive attitude has rubbed off on me immensely.

VYPE: what has been your biggest obstacle in your athletic career and how did you overcome it?

Bevin: Honestly, my biggest obstacle has probably been myself. I have this thing about people watching me golf, and when they are I tend to get nervous and play worse than I do when I’m at practice just playing with my friends. I’ve had to learn a routine to do before every swing as a way to calm my nerves. I’ve also learned that I do better when my dad and stepmom are there at my tournaments to cheer me on.

VYPE: You can pick any place for a summer vacation, where do you go and who do you take with you?

Bevin: If I could pick anywhere to go I’d choose to return to Belize, but with my closest friends and sister once we all turn 18. Belize has been my favorite place I’ve visited over the years and I would love to go back again.

VYPE: What do you love about your sport?

Bevin: What I love about golf is how it’s truly a mental game. I think the best way to explain it would be a quote from Bobby Jones. “Golf is the closest game to the game we call life. You get bad breaks from good shots and good brakes from bad shots, but you have to play the ball where it lies.” You learn to think out every move 3 moves ahead, you have to think critically while remaining calm and collected.

VYPE: Here is your chance to say hello, goodbye or thank you to anyone you wish.

Bevin: I owe everything to my Dad and Stepmom, without them I probably would have never started golfing. I wouldn’t trade my Sundays playing 18 holes with my dad for anything. Thank y’all!
