Idabel senior golfer Cole Grant picked up the sport at 7 years old so he and his grandfather would have something to do together.

“Honestly, he’s pretty old school and didn’t play sports in high school really , so I’m sure he could care less if I played,” Grant said, laughing, “but I know he still supports me. I’m sure he’s pretty proud though.”

As much as he loves golf, the Idabel senior thrives on the basketball court.

“It’s not that I don’t like golf,” Grant said, “it’s just the moment I picked up a basketball, I fell in love.”

He also runs track and spends his free time around his family, friends and the weight room.

“It keeps me busy year-round,” Grant said. “I’m a pretty competitive person, and I just like competing and winning with my friends and teammates.”

This spring season will provide Grant his last chance to compete for the Warriors, against adversaries he’s quarreled with almost his whole life.

“I really just enjoy the small-town environment and being able to compete against kids I’ve known since kindergarten,” Grant said. “As a kid, my friends and I would spend the entire summer swimming and golfing at the golf course.”

If things go right, Grant will have a chance to make state in track & field and golf.

“I really just want to improve and the main goal is to qualify for state [in golf],” Grant said. “Track, we have a serious chance of winning state. We traditionally [are] a really good track school. Golf will be kind of tough, but I think I can do it.”
