After playing multiple sports for most of her life, sophomore Maysa Weeks decided she was just going to stick to softball this year as she started high school.
“My dad got me started playing T-ball when I was little and coached me a lot of those years and I love this game more than the others I played so that’s what made me decide to stick with softball,” said Weeks.
But this season was a little rocky for Maysa and her Lady Bulldog teammates who were 16-9 and made it to regionals. “Covid really hurt us this season. We hardly ever had a game where everyone was there at the same time. We had individuals quarantined, the coach was quarantined, the whole team was even quarantined at one point, and we even had some of the players who got Covid,” said Maysa. “We were looking pretty good at the start of the season, but Covid really knocked us out for about three weeks until we got to regionals where we played some of our best ball of the year but still ended up losing.”
Weeks describes herself as competitive, independent and caring. Though she says she doesn’t really have a particular person she’s patterned her play after, she does have a role model of sorts. “One of my favorite players is Mackenzie Donihoo who plays at OU. I just love the way she plays,” said Maysa.
She also has a favorite teacher that has been special this year. “Ms. Morse is our math teach which is one of my least favorite subjects, but she really explains things well and talks on our level,” explained Weeks.
Maybe part of Maysa’s competitive nature comes from having a twin sister, Myka, who is also athletic. “We grew up playing a lot of the same sports together, but she’s gone more into basketball and cross country now.”
Her future spot in the Valliant lineup remains to be seen if this first season is any indication. “I grew up playing in the infield but for most of this season I was in center field until we got to district play when coach moved me to third base. But he’s told me that he thinks I could be an All-State outfielder because I’m pretty good at chasing down fly balls and making diving catches.”
Maysa says her strength is her hitting which is why she says she prefers slow pitch to fast pitch softball.
