Idabel’s Kylene Denton Athlete Spotlight Presented by McCurtain County National Bank

By Payton Moody
At Idabel High School, one athlete stands out for her determination, dedication and drive.
Kylene Denton is a standout in the world of high school cross country, who is making a
name for herself both on and off the track.
One of Denton’s most cherished coaches is none other than Coach Denton, who also
happens to be her mother. She instilled in her daughter the value of striving for excellence,
both in sports and in personal growth. “Coach Denton has taught me to strive for the best
no matter what,” Denton said.

On the team front, Denton finds inspiration in her teammate Quintasia Johnson, fondly
known as Redd. While Redd doesn’t participate in cross country, her unwavering support
has been a pillar of strength for Denton. “Redd is a hard worker who is willing to push me
and my teammates,” she said.
One teacher who has made a lasting impact on Denton is Mrs. Chaney. “She showed that she
cared for me as a student and was always there for me no matter what the situation was.”
The off-season is a crucial time for athletes to hone their skills, and Denton was no
exception. She dedicated her summer to rigorous training, logging countless miles to
prepare for the upcoming season. Denton and her teammates committed themselves to
regular practice, putting in the work at least four days a week. Their hard work over the
summer is now paying dividends during the season.
Denton has learned the value of persistence and mental fortitude during her time in cross
country. “Cross country pushes you physically but it also challenges you mentally,” Denton
said. “It is a tough sport, but it has taught me many things.”
Denton has set her sights on goals for the season, both individually and as a team: “My next
goal is to continue to get better so that hopefully I will be able to advance to state.”
Beyond high school, Denton has plans to attend college, with aspirations for an academic
scholarship or a track/cross country scholarship. Her future is bright, and she’s determined
to continue defying barriers and achieving success.
