Among the cheers and echoes of the court, Akiera Hawk, a standout at Pittsburg High School, reflects on her basketball journey—a narrative shaped by coaches, teammates and the invaluable lessons learned through the game.
In the pantheon of mentors, Coach Jenson emerges as a beacon: “Coach Jenson has made me an all-around better athlete and a better person. I wish I could play for him a few more years.”
Teammates often become the pillars of support, and for Akiera, Alanna Williams from Hartshorne holds a special place. “There’s no one I’d rather be on the same team as than her,” Akiera said. “She is an amazing player who knows how to pick me up when I’m down.”
In the academic realm, Mrs. Patterson stands out as an influential teacher: “She’s really been there for me in my years at Pittsburg and has an amazing teaching style that I’ve learned so much from.”
Preparing for the upcoming season, Akiera focuses on the often-overlooked mental game: “I’ve been working on my confidence. Mental strength makes up most of the game, and it’s something that I would like to continue to progress in.”
Basketball’s impact transcends the court, infusing Akiera with a profound work ethic. “Basketball has given me a work ethic that has got me through so much,” she said. “I’m so grateful for the dedication basketball has taught me.”
Amidst the tapestry of memories, one shines brightly for Akiera: “Winning the NABI National Championship. The environment was intense and something I’ll never forget.” This season brings forth new goals for Akiera. “I have the personal goal of being a better leader than I’ve ever been before,” she said. “This season I want to really step up for my team.”
As the schedule unfolds, a matchup against Hartshorne stands out for Akiera. “I can’t wait to be on the court with Alanna Williams, even if it’s on the opposite team.” The anticipation of facing a skilled opponent, yet cherished teammate, adds an extra layer of excitement.
Peering beyond high school, Akiera envisions a future at Southeastern Oklahoma State University. “My plans after high school are to attend Southeastern Oklahoma State University and play basketball for Coach Grover until I receive a degree in biology.”
