What is a Hometown Hero? One definition includes someone who partners with individuals to help everyday people make a difference. In high school sports, the definition describes a player that strives to make their team as a whole stronger, on and off the field of competition.  Both descriptions could simply be titled…Madison Ayers.

“Madi is a great athlete with the biggest heart and sweetest soul. She is the teammate that is always there for her team sisters,” replied McAlester softball coach Kelleya Cox. “She will stay late and hit, field or even run a mile for extra conditioning with whoever wants to stay. Madi always makes sure everyone is where they are supposed to be and has what they need to have. Madi is a great role model on and off the field. She excels in the classroom as well.”

Ayers, who will be entering her junior season for the Lady Buffs starting at third base, seeks to lead by example making character count.

“I define it as the way someone acts or behaves. Having good character is important because it defines who you are as a person,” Ayers said with a smile. “If you have good character others will trust and respect you as a person. As a hero, you hope that others will want to follow your example.”

Ayers, who wears the number-13 jersey with confidence- the same number since she first began to play softball at age four- understands what’s required to be successful.

“For me to be successful it has taken hard work, dedication, accountability and the motivational support from my teammates, coaches and teachers,” said Ayers, who maintains a 4.0 GPA. “Who I am today comes from the every day life examples of my parents. They are hard workers, dedicated to whatever they do and they don’t complain or give up when things get hard.”

With the beginning of the 2022 fastpitch season just around the corner, Madison Ayers is determined to do whatever it takes to help her team find success. Her advice is simple, yet to the point.

“If you work hard and give 100 percent every day in everything you do regardless of the circumstances, you will be successful.”
