To anyone that knows her story, it should be no surprise that Ashlynn Franklin has a passion for sports and specifically for softball. The starting catcher for the Quinton Lady Savages admits that softball is a huge part of her DNA.

“For as long as I can remember, I’ve been playing softball,” said the 2022 senior. “My parents (Rachel and Brent) loved to play so they would take me to their co-ed league games. I would take my glove so I could play catch with them between games.”

The family tradition includes Franklin’s jersey number-24, the same number worn by her brother (Lane) when he played baseball in high school at Quinton.

Franklin, who also plays on the defensive corners at third and first base, feels most valuable when she puts on the gear and goes behind home plate.

“I thrive on trying to make the hard plays look easy no matter the position, but catcher is where I feel at home,” she said. “You have to be focused on every pitch, be ready to make the throw to keep a runner from advancing as well as not allowing a ball to get past you.”

When asked to define herself in three words, Franklin didn’t hesitate in her response

“Trustworthy, intelligent and most importantly dedicated,” replied Franklin with confidence. “Dedication ranks number one because anything I put my mind to, I give it 100-percent trying to be successful.”

It’s a trait that Franklin credits her mom and dad for setting the standard.

“Mom always tells me ‘never let anyone tell you what you can or can’t do’ and dad has proved by his example that if you really want something you have to work hard for it. You’re the only person that can give you success.”

In addition to softball, Franklin is also a cheerleader for the Savages and will play basketball this season while continuing to compete in speech and debate.

“After high school, I plan to be an FBI profiler and investigator so I’ll need a degree in forensics and psychology,” said Franklin. “I like helping people and seeing the way different people think.”

A die-hard fan of major league baseball and the Chicago Cubs, Franklin explains her play-by-play approach in every game.

“Put the last play in the past and focus on making the next play. It applies to a lot of things in life. If you’re worried about messing up, you’ll never show your true potential.”
