Idabel’s Aidan Owens – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Pine Cellular

By Derrick Smith

Role models are key in the lives of high school student-athletes. They give the athletes someone to look up to and to be a blueprint for their lives as they grow. Aidan Owens says that his teammates and coaches have made the biggest impact on his life.

“My teammates and friends are my biggest influences,” he said. “Being around them makes me want to be more involved. Also, coach Wyrick has been a big part of my life. He is the best teacher that I have had. He is always in a good mood and he has taught me to enjoy all the little moments in life.”

Aidan is a junior at Idabel High School, where he is a member of the school’s powerlifting and track teams. For the powerlifting team, he is in the 123-pound weight class, while he runs the 800M on the track team.

Being successful is not something that comes easy, especially in the two sports that Owens is involved in. But he says that the support of others has helped him to grow into the athlete he is today.

“My determination is one thing that has helped me be successful,” he said. “My coaches and friends believe in me. And also, I have gained more confidence and understanding in what I can do.”

There have been some memorable moments that he has enjoyed over his time participating in sports. Aidan says that a couple of achievements are at the top of his list of favorite moments.

“Placing during competition is a great feeling,” he said. “My favorite moments were when I placed first in Regionals in powerlifting and third at State.”

While he enjoys sports, Aidan does his best to keep his grades high.

“I have always focused on academics,” he said. “I placed first in my freshman year.”

Overall, Owens says that he enjoys life and tries to be a positive influence to those that are around him.

“I always want everyone around me to be happy. I try to keep a positive attitude toward everything.”
