Valliant’s Brooklyn Young – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Pine Cellular

By Ember McElrath

A junior at Valliant High School, Brooklyn Young is already showing those around her what good leadership and character is all about.

“I think of good character as a person who is peaceful and a good listener; someone who seeks to understand,” Brooklyn explained.

Being a leader can come with challenges, but it also comes with some pretty great perks.

“Knowing that people look up to me is inspiring, and it pushes me to do my best even when I may feel unmotivated,” Brooklyn said.

When challenges do arise Brooklyn turns to her faith and those around her that she can always count on.

“When times get tough I turn to God and I also depend on my family to help me through,” said Brooklyn.

Young keeps herself busy by running on the track and cross-country teams, being a member of the Quiz Bowl team, and taking an active role with the National Honor Society.

“To balance school and life I find myself setting times for each activity and I have to allow myself to step away from school if it becomes too overwhelming,” said Brooklyn.

Growing up Brooklyn was taught to always give 100 percent in everything she does.

“I have been raised in a competitive household where I have always been encouraged to do my best, whether that be in sports or my schooling,” Brooklyn said. “I was also raised in the church and have been taught many morals and values that I try to uphold to this day.”

Being a leader who tries to show good character can be difficult at times, but Brookyln knows just who to turn to for some inspiration.

“My mother inspires me because she is a kind person who has an amazing work ethic and although she has achieved many things in her life she has always stayed humble and been grateful for her blessing,” said Brooklyn.

After high school Brooklyn plans to attend college and earn a degree in psychology with the ultimate goal of becoming a counselor.
